Improv workshop with John Abbott from Second City/iO/Annoyance Theater
Improv Workshop with John Abbott of Second City/iO/Annoyance Theater
John is touring the country workshopping with improv teams. He's coming to the ImprovBroadway Theater on May 12th from 9-11 am.
Here's a bit of his bio from him:
" A little bit of background on me: I started studying improv in 1999 in my home town of Chicago, first at Second City's Conservatory, then at iO, and finally at the Annoyance. I interned and then worked at iO for nearly a decade, performing on 3 different teams while working there. I played with Wing Night at the Playground (Chicago) for 14 years, a team that played in the Gainsville Improv festival and the Chicago Improv Festival (CIF).
Since 2001, I have been an official photographer for CIF and the College Improv Tournament.
I currently teach at WestSide Improv in Wheaton, Illinois, and play with the musical improv team Dirty Bars. I also coach the Therapy Players and Fullmodo. At any given time, I am coaching between 2 to 4 different teams. When I'm in San Jose, I perform in a duo with Chris Shurland of the American Improv Theater called The Legends Of Public Access.
I have a number of workshops that I like to teach, but my favorites are Instant Characters, Super Yes, and what I call I³. Instant Characters helps performers access characters quicker, to give themselves a POV that will help inform both them and their scene partner. Super Yes is a custom made skill that I designed which literally flips a student's understanding of improv on its head, in a good way, and gets them adding important information. I³ is an individual feedback workshop that breaks down a performers strengths and weaknesses, and gives them something solid to work on.
If you're interested in hosting a workshop, I can send you a complete list of my specialties.
This has been my dream to do this for years, and I finally have the impetus and resources to make it possible.
Thanks for your time, and for your dedication to my favorite art form.
"John Abbott has been improv coach to The Therapy Players - a troupe of professional psychotherapists in Chicago – for nearly a year, and has been an enormous factor in our development as a troupe. John is a gem. If you have a chance to work with him, do it!"
"I have appreciated John's insightful and caring coaching. I really value that he can call me out on my bullshit without making me feel like crap. He does an excellent job of giving supportive and specific feedback that has helped me become more aware of my tendencies, both positive and problematic, and pushes me to grow as an improvisor."
- Eric Cho
"John carefully observes his students and finds exercises and notes tailored directly to what's needed to bring out the best in them. He gives insightful and helpful feedback, checking with students to be sure what he's saying makes sense. Always fun and meaningful to work with John!"
- Ruth Richman
“Among the many things I appreciate about John’s improv coaching, two stand out. First, John is very thoughtful in designing exercises that target what each learner or each improv team most needs to work on and improve. And second, John’s feedback is simultaneously constructive and positive, allowing the recipients to grow and learn and stretch while still feeling good about themselves.”
"I really enjoy working with you. I learn a great deal every time and love how specific and thorough you provide feedback. I always feel encouraged, free to have fun and take risk, and for this I am extremely grateful."
“John is a supportive and encouraging coach. He gives specific, individualized feedback which is aimed at helping you become the best improviser you can be - no matter your age or experience...and he is a very funny guy.”
